Discovering Opportunities

Discovering Opportunities 9 Program

2024-25 School Year

Discovering Opportunities 9 (DO) is a program that is offered to Grade 9 students at several schools across the province of Nova Scotia. It is a program that was built on the success of the Options and Opportunities Program (O2), offered in Grades 10-12 in most high schools in this province. In all of CCRCE, BHJH is currently the only school that offers the DO Program.

As part of the DO Program, students complete the same academic requirements for grade 9 and opportunities are not limited, as they move into Grade 10. This program is designed to offer students opportunities to explore career options, develop community partnerships, and extend their learning beyond the classroom. In addition to class trips, worksite visits and guest speakers, students participate in various job shadow placements and develop a Life Work Portfolio throughout the year.

Students benefit from:

  • Small class size & close-knit positive learning environment
  • Motivation to achieve academic potential
  • Making connections between school, home, and community
  • Direct support in developing potential career pathway(s)
  • Opportunities for leadership and empowerment

Acceptance into the DO Program is application based. Students and parents/guardians must complete an application to apply to the DO Program. The list of applicants is shortlisted, based on application responses, teacher references, and recommendations from administration. Interviews are then conducted, during school hours, and a maximum of 15 students will be selected for the program. It is a privilege for students to participate in this program, therefore student accountability, academics, and behavior are all taken into account as part of the selection process. Partnering with families is essential for success, and communication between home and school will happen often, as the year goes on.

The Admission Process:

  1. Student and parent/guardian complete and return the application form.
  2. Applicants are shortlisted and interviews are scheduled during school hours.
  3. Students participate in an informal interview with DO Teacher and Admin.
  4. Decisions are made and the 2024-2025 DO Class is selected
  5. Families are notified with a letter sent home indicating whether or not they will be offered a seat in the program.
  6. Successful applicants sign the 2024-2025 Learning Agreement and return it to school.
  7. Students and parents/guardians attend an orientation session in September.
